HISTORY
Access to Justice (AJ) was founded in 1999, at an eventful time in Nigeria history – the end of a relatively long history of military despotism, and the reinstatement of political democracy.
In 2000, AJ opened its main office and began important aspects of its work. Access to Justice works to defend justice and the rights of individuals and communities to accessible, dependable, fair and impartial justice system, by monitoring and denouncing abuse, advocating reform, expanding rights of access to justice, and strengthening justice institutions.
AJ further contributes to shared information on human rights and worldwide development of its jurisprudence.
BOARDS
Access to justice is served by a still developing International Advisory Board. These include Hon. Justice Anthony Aniagolu, Emeritus Justice of the Nigerian Supreme Court, Hon. Justice Olajide Olatawura, Emeritus Justice of the Nigerian Supreme Court, Hon. Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, Emeritus Justice of the Nigerian Supreme Court, Morten Kjaerum, Director of the Danish Institute of Human Rights and Professor Ademola Popoola, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Nigeria. Access to Justice also has a 5 member Board of Trustees, all of whom are Nigerian lawyers.
